New £20 million UK packaging plant

8 September 2009

Excelsior Technologies, a UK flexible packaging converter which exports 60% of its output, has commenced operations at a new £20 million, 8.5 acre ‘super-site’. The new plant in Deeside is said to represent the UK’s biggest single investment in flexible packaging for decades.

“At a time when some high visibility names in the packaging industry are deserting the UK, we have put our faith and our money in the outstanding skills and technologies which we have nurtured here and which have attracted customers from as far afield as China and Japan, the US and South Africa,” avows managing director Dave Moorcroft.

Excelsior sold more than a billion packs last year and the new site will increase capacity further with the installation of two new 9-colour Heliostar rotogravure presses from Windmöller & Hölscher among a total of 20 production machines including transfers from the company’s Salford and Flint plants. These include Schiavi laminators, Ashe slitters, and pouch making lines occupying a 200,000ft2 production facility.

The company has also built a dedicated research, design, development and prototyping facility for its flexible packs and pouches.

The new site, which benefited from around £1 million funding support from the Welsh Assembly, will support 200 local jobs. It also achieves the ISO9001/2008 international standard in quality management and the BRC/IOP standard for clean manufacturing.

“One great advantage of a site such as this is the fact we can set the standard as high as it comes in terms of quality and environmental care,” says David Moorcroft. “It also has state-of-the-art environmental protection at every stage of the process.”

Excelsior also operates a film extrusion facility in Nelson, which provides a dedicated quality-controlled source of film feedstock for its new Deeside production base.
