Nautilus HITS the counterfeiters

19 March 2007

As reported in our last issue, Hidden Image Technology is a new high security ticket printing technology that has the ability to hide images in a vast array of materials. Developer Nautilus Security is working in partnership branding specialist Nilorn UK to foil attempts by counterfeiters trying to duplicate products and packaging.

HIT is said to be an inexpensive and reliable method of security marking with encrypted 2D and 3D images that remain invisible to the naked eye unless a special lens is used to view the image. Each ticket can be quickly checked to ensure authenticity and the hidden image is impossible to reverse engineer as there is nothing to scan.

Says Marc Smith, of Nautilus Security: “HIT works by mathematic algorithm which is generated with the end user’s chosen design. It is then merged with either the printed design, or a master micro embossing shim is made to apply the image to paper, board and fabrics and even leather surfaces. It is extremely difficult to copy as the high resolution of data regenerating the exact algorithm would result in colossal unusable files.

“Nilorn works with some very prestigious clothing brands who may have counterfeit issues, he explains. “What it means for them is that their consumers will have greater confidence over the product they are buying, knowing for certain that they are getting what they paid for. And the beauty of HIT is that is a cheaper alternative to other, more costly, security systems, as it uses existing printing technologies.”

According to Nautilus Securities, this dual purpose smart technology both protects brands and promotes them, offering opportunities to act as an interactive marketing tool.

Nilorn brand sales manager Chris Wildman explains: “HIT provides interaction with the customer through the use of a decoding lens. Rather than just a hidden message that indicates whether a product is genuine, it can reveal a specific marketing image or message. For example, you could hide competition answers or codes. It’s a quirky device that adds to the overall feel of a product yet at the same time provides a practical anti counterfeiting solution.”

He reveals: “We are currently working with Nautilus on a high profile design and security concept for a well known American clothing company”.
