National launches microwave resistant hotmelt

5 February 2007

Ultra-Melt 85, new from National Adhesives, is a hotmelt case and carton sealing adhesive suitable for food packaging for microwave ovens. While traditional hotmelts will fail in a microwave, Ultra-Melt 85 is said to retain stability, ensuring pack integrity for ready meal cartons both at low/chilled temperatures and into the oven.

According to National, this exceptional stability also improves performance on the production line. The new formulation ensures excellent heat resistance, whilst maintaining fast set speed and good adhesion, it states. “With a set time of just 0.5s, Ultra-Melt 85 is pushing the boundaries of performance excellence.”

The new adhesive is also claimed to be clean running and offer excellent pot life and viscosity stability, providing consistent running conditions that achieve higher productivity with less downtime or pack rejects. Based on the latest copolymer technology, it is said to offer high heat stress resistance suitable to bond hot filled products, with excellent adhesion to a range of boards - including difficult PE coated boards - at a range of temperatures.
