Muller Martini makes debut at Sefra

8 July 2009

Italian printing house Sefra, in Valgatara, has bought its first Muller Martini press, an Alprinta 74V web offset machine to be used to print film labels.

“The hey day of paper labels is pretty much over, even though orders are still increasing slightly,” avows Romano Franchini, the company's owner and managing director. “By contrast, the film printing business has been growing continuously over the past few years.”

Sefra’s new Alprinta 74V press offers infinitely variable sizes. “Because we have so many size changes, it was an easy choice for us to make,“ says Romano Franchini, “especially after our tests at the Muller Martini Print Training Center in Maulburg produced extremely persuasive results.”

The carbon fibre plate and blanket cylinders on the press can be changed in under five minutes, allowing rapid conversion to a new size. This was what led Sefra to its choice. Romano Franchini says: “With a maximum of 50,000 units per job, our work structure is extremely diversified. Therefore, we frequently need to make changes to the press.”

One of the highlights of the Alprinta is its ink zone control. The ink profile, which is imported through CIP3 data, can be clearly visualised and manipulated by means of a touchscreen. The operators can submit orders quickly, working in conjunction with the automatic makeready system, which preconfigures the machine and eliminates duplicate order data entries.

The Alprinta V StretchCorrect software is used to print in offset technology on thin and stretchable films and, thanks to intelligent servodrive technology, printers using the software package can have a direct impact on the required print result. StretchCorrect features printing length and width correction components, which reduces the amount of waste material and significantly decreases the set-up time, according to Muller Martini.
