Mondi to be demerged

19 April 2007

Parent company Anglo American is to demerge the Mondi paper and packaging group in mid 2007, making it an independent, publicly quoted business with listings in both London and Johannesburg.

Mondi is currently a leading player in the paper and packaging sector, with 35,000 employees in 35 countries. Anglo American plans to concentrate on its core mining interests.

Mondi Group ceo David Hathorn comments: “The demerger represents a big step forward for Mondi. Being part of Anglo American has served us well, but today our two businesses operate in different market sectors. We believe becoming an independent, publicly quoted business will create new opportunities and give us more flexibility to take Mondi forward.”

Sir John Parker and Cyril Ramaphosa are to become Mondi’s new non executive joint chairmen. They will be supported by other non executive directors who will be announced in due course.
