Martin rewinder triples output

30 October 2006

Colombo based Flexiprint, one of Sri Lanka’s largest converters and exporters of flexible packaging for tea, recently invested in a new Martin Automatic LRD non stop rewinder to enhance the performance of its custom built Gidue Combat 370 eight colour flexo press. The two-spindle automatic rewinder enables the press to run continuously, winding finished rolls up to 12 streams across, without stopping.

According to Flexiprint’s director Peter Deckker: “The benefits of continuous rewinding are far better than we had expected.” He claims the output of the Gidue has tripled, to 18M pieces per day, and waste costs have dropped by six per cent. “The tension control is now excellent, and the rewinding quality very precise,” he adds.

The Martin LRD uses two cantilevered spindles for winding, eliminating the need to handle heavy core shafts. It winds the slit and die cut ribbons to a selected length on one of the spindles, transferring them automatically to the empty cores on the other spindle, without stopping or slowing the press. It then automatically unloads the finished rolls. The only operator tasks are to load cores and pack the finished rolls for shipment to the tea packager.
