Making the most of your paper and board reel stocks

2 September 2004

American machinery manufacturer Fibercore Onsite Paper Services has developed new technology for dividing paper and board reels without the need to rewind. The equipment – now available in Europe - employs two special cutting systems said to enable paper mills and printers to fully maximize their reel stocks.

Reels can be divided into two or three sections, if required, using the new apparatus. The reel is divided in the vertical position, then the top section is removed by clamp truck and the remaining section is 'dressed' with the second cutting system.

This secondary function is said to provide a high quality edge that is perfect for high speed rotogravure and offset printing. After it has been carried out, the reel is removed from the machine and the top section replaced, then also dressed, resulting in "two perfect reels ready for the press". As there is no unwinding during the process, the reel retains the original mill wind tension - a major advantage for pressroom operators. Dividing a reel and dressing both surfaces is said to take less than 15min.

Reels up to four metres wide and two metres in diameter can be accommodated on the system, which is mobile so that it can be transported to where the reels are located.
