Machine and software combo makes to measure

In the UK, Kingston-upon-Hull based Displaypak has installed a KM626A digital die cutting machine with Kasemake packaging design software from AG/CAD. It is using the machine to produce packaging and display signage from a variety of materials including, display board, corrugated board, cartonboard, vinyl and pop-up banner materials.

The KM626A has a working area of 2,500mm x 1,600mm and comes with the multipurpose ‘A’ head, comprising an electronic oscillating knife, tangentially controlled drag knife, creasing module, pen module and a vinyl kiss cutting tool. The machine also includes the KM Vision system, which uses a camera to register against printed registration marks, allowing the easy finishing of pre printed sheets.

Displaypak MD Andy Dearman says: “The range of sizes available and the way the camera system integrates into the packaging design software meant my operators only had one product to learn, rather than learning many proprietary products bolted together.”

He adds: “With PDF export in true 3D, we can propose multiple designs to our clients at the click of a button. We have entered into specific dialogue with the client and perhaps shown three or four modifications to them before our competitors have delivered even the first sample.”

The machine is being used for short production runs as well as prototyping. “The ability to produce a production run without the delays and costs involved with die cutting or finishing by hand, has opened up new markets to us immediately,” Mr Dearman concludes.
