Lasers make micro holes for freshness

10 February 2004

Rofin-Baasel has introduced Perfolas Film - a turnkey solution to produce small holes in paper and plastics packaging to prolong the shelf life of fresh foods.

At the heart of the system is a special optical multiplexer said to allow it to achieve consistent quality and exceptionally round holes at high speeds and varying distances. Most of the films commonly used in the food industry can be processed at the desired quality and speed. Films as wide as 1,200mm can be accommodated on the machine and up to 16 perforation rows are possible across the web.

Other laser applications in film offered by the company include the production of easy-tear strips in packaging.
