US manufacturer Beta LaserMike’s LaserSpeed non-contact laser encoder has helped converters to measure accurately the length and speed of products during production.
Converted products typically exhibit a certain amount of slippage on the drive roller based on texture, product composition, or tension at other points on the line. A contact encoder attached to the drive roller exhibits the same problems and can cost a converter a significant amount of money in unnecessary expense due to product give-away, waste, maintenance, and system downtime.
The LaserSpeed can solve this problem, it is claimed, when installed at the infeed side of the rewind station. The encoder uses advanced, laser-based technology to measure the length and speed of product precisely during production without making contact with the material.
Length and speed measurements are captured with better than +0.05% accuracy, claims Beta LaserMike, which offers encoders with measurement speeds up to 12,000 m/min, standoff distances to 1,000mm, and measurement depth of field to 100 mm.
Beta LaserMike will be displaying the LaserSpeed encoder at the CPP Converting & Package Printing Expo 2012 in the USA (April 18-19), in booth 644.
