Large scale foil systems

US manufacturer Graphic Art Systems has launched its largest Eagle hotfoil application system, with a format width of 1,600 mm.

Based on the Bobst SP1600E autoplaten, it includes a 9-zone heated honeycomb chase, three foil indexing rollers, servo controlled take-up, automatic on/off impression unit and foil brush removal unit producing a fully automatic hot foil stamping press with a massive 1,600 mm x 1,115mm sheet size. Options can add the new TMD modular foil rewind unit with dancer roller and anti-backlash system to rewind all types of foil with built-in foil break detection system and available from 2-8 arbors. Hologram registration is also available with up to 12 individual hologram indexes.

President of GAS Mike King comments: “Recently, we have received many enquiries for large size automatic foiling platens as the move to larger printing presses gathers pace. We have responded with the introduction of systems for both 1,600 and 1,420mm presses which are not available from any other manufacturer.”

The other method to foil these larger sheets is with coldfoil application directly in-line on the printing press, which GAS also offers through its joint venture with Scienta, of the UK.

“We know that even on these large sheet sizes there are jobs which require the ability to index the foil to achieve a economical foil usage,” Mike King affirms. “This would clearly be a hotfoil job, however there are others which have larger foil coverage that would benefit from the higher operational speed of coldfoil to again provide the most and economical result.

“Not being wed to either allows us the flexibility to offer the best solution across the largest format range in the industry with either hot or coldfoil application.”
