Label adhesive plays it cool

21 December 2005

Herma says its new 62G acrylic dispersion adhesives for cool/damp label applications combine the advantages previously only offered separately by acrylic dispersion and hotmelts. For example, the company states, "converting of 62G has the same properties as a standard acrylic dispersion adhesive, but even superior to hotmelt in tackiness and final adhesion at very low temperatures. This is an advantage when pre-packed food products have to be labelled in refrigerated storerooms."

The new adhesive can be used at temperatures ranging from -10 to +80degC. Condensation on the surface of the packaging is said to present no problems, and it is already being used for labelling milk containers at speeds of up to 200/min.

Said to be far easier to die cut than hotmelt adhesives, 62G enables higher label production speeds to be achieved while minimizing the risk of adhesive bleeding. Also, according to Herma, the coating profile achieved by its curtain coating process is smoother and more uniform than that achieved on hotmelt coating lines.

Also claimed to stand up very well to ageing and be crystal clear, it can be used to produce highly transparent labels for cool/damp applications, and for laser laminations.
