Ink system boosts Chinese board printer

20 July 2005

Stork Prints has supplied a Colorsat Compact 32SB gravimetric ink dispensing system to Chinese board packaging converter Shenzhen Jinjia Color Printing Group, for its gravure printing plant in Shenzhen City. It will provide colour management for all throughput on the company's three nine colour Cerutti presses, boosting colour quality and printing process efficiency, and cutting ink preparation times drastically.

The ink logistics overhaul comes as Shenzhen Jinjia sets out to boost annual tobacco board container production to two billion units. Vice president Zhuang Dezhi comments: "Stork Prints' dispensing system gives us a fully automated ink logistics solution for the first time, helping us drive productivity to new levels without any compromise in quality. We had no hesitation in choosing the Colorsat Compact, thanks to its flexibility, reliability, speed and precision accuracy."

A modular system, the Colorsat Compact 32 SB at Shenzhen Jinjia has been configured with 20 solvent ink components. Dispensing accuracy is 1g for batch sizes up to 25 kg, with 0.1g accuracy optionally available. Typically, a 20kg batch with four components is dispensed in under 2.5min.

Until the installation, Shenzhen Jinjia had relied on ink suppliers for formulations. The new system is fully integrated into the production workflow, so colour preparations can be carried out on a just-in-time, or 'on-demand' basis. This, in turn, reduces stocks and lead times. The system includes Stork's special valve design, and self learning software for rapid and splash-free dispensing.

With Stork's Ink Management Software included, the system instantly calculates ink ingredients for the desired PMS or spot colour. Its recipe/order database is said to allow exact recall of previous orders, guaranteeing colour consistency for repeat orders. Stork says it can easily calculate 'press-return' inks into future recipes, enabling raw material waste to be reduced – in most cases, by at least 30 per cent.
