Improved knifeholder at ICE

28 October 2005

Mario Cotta is to display a new Gold Series pneumatic knifeholder at ICE 2005, in Munich (November 22-24), hall 1, stand 1-U21. It can cut flexible materials up to 450g/m2 at speeds up to 1,450m/min, and has a minimum slitting width of 50mm with a standard 150 x 80mm circular knife. Axle distances have been calculated to ensure it is easily interchangeable with most other existing knifeholders.

In response to market demand, many operator friendly features are incorporated. The descent of the knife is regulated by a three-position valve: at rest, half approach, and working mode. The holder has only one air entry (upper side) while air transition to the bottom section is internal. Lateral thrust can be calibrated through the air pressure of the supply line, to minimize knife wear.

To make the control of the descent easier for the operator, the depth of vertical stroke is calibrated as a function of the knife diameter. All that needs to be done to get the correct descent is to measure the knife diameter, even if the knife is worn or reground. The cant angle can be adjusted easily at the front of the holder to five different positions so that a range of materials can be cut. The knife is always on the same axis as the vertical thrust, preventing unwanted lateral force.

The new holder is also said to make changing knives easier and safer, and it can be assembled either on dove-tail rails (with or without rack), or on rails with linear bearings.
