HELL selects GRT to beta test Cellaxy

Cellaxy, the new direct laser system from HELL, which is said to simplify the production of impression cylinders, will undergo further beta testing at GRT’s new site in Hamm.

GRT, which produces gravure forms for the packaging industry, has invested €1.7M in renovating and expanding the site in Hamm. The new site started manufacturing gravure cylinders for a range of applications in mid June 2007.

GRT offers a range of options for the production of gravure cylinders. Most of its production is carried out on traditional engraving systems with two K500 systems.

Now, with the new Cellaxy laser process, a cylinder coated with a chromium layer is imaged directly using a high performance laser. The process offers a resolution of 2,500dpi making it possible to create ultrafine details for linecut and fonts, and providing an alternative to existing etching procedures, says GRT.

Horst Goerz, senior partner at GRT, says he is impressed by the fact that it takes only a few steps to create printing forms. “A chromium plated cylinder is lasered and polished and can then be printed – it really doesn’t get any easier than that. I’ve wanted a process like this for a long time,” he says.

The company also says said that after just a short start-up phase, it was able to deliver cylinders lasered using Cellaxy to a variety of printshops, which then used the cylinders in real production scenarios.
