Heidelberg ups speed of CD 74

11 April 2006

Heidelberg unveiled the straight-mode version of its medium-format (50 x 70 cm) Speedmaster CD 74 press with a performance of 18,000sheets/hour using a wide spectrum of printing stocks ranging from lightweight paper to board. It was first shown at drupa with a 15,000 sheets/hour rating.

“Unique selling points include the innovative new suction head and automatic pile lifting control system in the feeder. It is ideal for customers who combine short runs and regular longer runs. There are many benefits for packaging and label printers who work with a number of printing materials and runs of different lengths,” said ceo Bernhard Schreier.

The press was showcased as a six colour machine with a coating unit and extended delivery at IPEX in the company’s packaging section. Said UK managing director George Clarke: “This is the most comprehensive packaging area that any one exhibitor has put on at a print show on one stand.”

The elevated CD74 press features a semi-automatic pile change system in the delivery for non-stop operation. This logistics concept is said to be the only one in the 50 x 70cm format class and a useful addition for packaging printing.

Available from this October at the new speed level the press options will include a new suction head, new automatic pile lifting control system, inking unit temperature control, Static Star Advanced as a static electricity eliminator for the feeder and delivery units and PowderStar for powdering at high production speeds. Extended delivery with the DryStar Combination dryer is required for coating machines.

The newly developed suction head can be set up quickly and easily, resulting in time savings of up to 20 per cent on the feeder, says the company. The suction head boasts integrated air hoses in the suction head casing. Previously it had been hard to see into the feeder. Values for separation and carrier air are controlled by parameters. The newly developed and patented lifting sucker concept automatically adapts to various materials. All the feeder settings can be saved on a job-specific basis and called up as presets for repeat jobs.
