Heidelberg press sets blistering pace

21 September 2007

A new Speedmaster XL 105-6+LX press is part of a £2M investment by UK skin and blister packaging specialist AW Clowes. The Heidelberg press has been installed in the company’s new 40,000ft2 premises in Stockport.

“We tested both the CD102 and XL105 technology in Germany,” says Richard Clowes, managing director and owner. “We liked the fantastic quality and the productivity of the XL. It’s faster and more automated, and because a lot of our work is short run the time taken on wash-ups and change-overs is critical. ‘Jaw dropping’ is what an operator said when they first saw it running at full speed.”

It is the company’s first press with a coater and having work coming off completely dry will help it push carton and blister pack work through to completion speedily without the fear of marking. In the point of sale market Clowes serves, a high volume of specials are specified so the six colour configuration was a necessity.

In trials and early production runs the company has been able to run folding boxboard at 18,000sheets/hour on some runs.

In addition to the press, a new visible light Prosetter 105 CTP system was also supplied by Heidelberg.
