Green film opens up envelope business

4 June 2007

A company that supplies envelope window film for billions of pieces of mail a year in Europe and the US has introduced a biodegradable version of its material.

EnviroSafe was developed by Multi-Plastics in the US in partnership with Clarifoil, the specialist producer of cellulose acetate films for windows and print lamination. The film is a woodpulp-based product that biodegrades in landfill and compost, and can also be recycled with paper and board or burned without noxious emissions.

Clarifoil is produced in the UK at Spondon, Derbyshire. Commercial director Gordon Willins says: “Multi-Plastics supplies envelope window film to nearly 40% of envelope manufacturers in Europe so we are delighted that they have selected products from our range for the new EnviroSafe offering.”

Paul Frith, managing director of Multi-Plastics Europe, says: “At present we see EnviroSafe as a niche product, but it is a niche which is growing as envelope manufacturers move towards minimum waste, maximum sustainability in line with green strategies.”
