Going nuts for nut butter!

20 March 2019

The UK market for spreads is now worth over half a million pounds, at around £512.4 million*.  Peanut butter sales soared around 17% in 2017 and nut-based spreads in general were forecast to reach over £100 million sales in 2018.

When it comes to choice for the consumer, there is a growing increase in the variety of nut flavoured butters as well as a move towards more ‘healthy’ nut options that don’t include sugar.  Perhaps this is a reflection of the more diverse communities in which we live, and our ever-developing taste buds.  These days, along with the more everyday peanut, you can find cashew, argan, pistachio, and almond nut butters.

One company that has embraced the new trend is Borna Foods, a young British company selling premium pistachios and butters, which are sourced from their family-owned farms and certified pistachios farms around the globe.  Launching in July last year, Borna felt there was a gap in the market for a naturally flavoured range of pistachio butters and have introduced six different butters onto the market.

Each of the Borna nut butters is full of flavour and packed with nutritional benefits, such as healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, which can contribute to a healthy heart. Pistachios are also a great source of protein, fibre, magnesium and vitamin B-6.

It was this message – that their nut butters are healthy - along with the high quality of the raw ingredients, which the company wanted to portray via their branding and packaging.  The overall result is a modern, sophisticated jar and label that uses coloured foiling to distinguish between the different varieties of butter.

The use of coloured foiling is a very effective tool, now available with digitally printed labels from label.co.uk.  “Borna Foods chose label.co.uk to produce our butter labels as they were able to give us the quality and finish to complete our high-end packaging,” comments Inesa Slevaite, in the marketing department. “It was important for us to find a label printing company that could offer this additional element at an acceptable cost as we wanted our labels to be highly visible; the colour options are very vibrant.”

Borna Foods are on a mission to convince people that a 100% plant-based butter makes way more sense than its dairy alternatives, since it’s more sustainable and is of equal or higher quality.  There are plans in the pipeline for future product extensions and to secure retail space in outlets in overseas markets.  Currently Borna Foods butters are available on Amazon and Ebay as well as on their own website and in various speciality health food shops in the UK.

Borna Foods Crunchy 100% Pure Pistachio Butter won a Great Taste 2018 Award and their pistachio butter range received an SIAL Innovation Award also in 2018.  All of Borna Foods products are vegan and vegetarian.
