Food safety standard comes on board

12 November 2003

An International Good Manufacturing Practice Standard for Corrugated and Solid Board has been developed by The European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers and The European Solid Board Organisation.

According to FEFCO, the new standard aims to ensure that the safety of food packaging is assured and properly documented. It is meant to provide a means of being able to adapt quickly to regulatory and customer demand through process control. Conformity is said to be guaranteed through a rigorous auditing process that will include an annual audit by a certified external auditor.

"Customer demand and regulation will require our industry to improve our process controls so as to document safety and enhance confidence in our products," says FEFCO secretary general Wim Hoebert. "The international standard provides a one-stop solution to meeting the strict requirements of both national and global users."
