Folder gluer spend brings savings

6 April 2010

A year after installing a new Speedmaster XL 105-5+L (5-colour with coater), UK based Herbert Walker has invested in another Heidelberg machine. This time the company has opted for a Diana Pro folder gluer which will cut outwork for its factory in Shipley by more than £100,000 a year and give it greater control over costs and turnround times.

The new machine will enable the company to handle a range of straightline and lock bottom boxes for the retail sector and to handle greetings cards without the need for pre-creasing.

Deputy managing director Mark Vanston says: “We liked the greetings card capability of the Diana Pro and the fact you don’t have to pre-crease. We liked the flexibility of the Diana and we run three Speedmaster presses, so we know the service and support Heidelberg provide and like their approach to open networking.”

To enable it to use the machine effectively, Herbert Walker has recruited an experienced folder gluer operator who will be team leader training up other staff to run the equipment. Initially, the Diana Pro will run day shifts but it is hoped demand will push it onto double day shifts soon.

The Diana Pro is capable of running at 650m/min and can output a broad range of products and materials. In addition to packaging and greetings cards, it can handle CD covers and direct mail work. The line at Herbert Walker is a 94cm wide, 17.5 m long line which uses the Digiset semi-automatic preparation system to help complete makeready speedily.
