FIS Impianti roll handling system for Mepco

29 December 2006

One of the largest producers of kraft liner, test liner and fluting in the Arabian Peninsula, Mepco, the Middle East Paper Co, has installed an FIS Impianti roll handling system at its Jeddah plant.

Mepco's requirement was for a simple-to-operate, reliable configuration, minimizing the warehouse space requirement, and taking into account a future connection to a proposed new warehouse. The new line was to handle all of the 300,000t/year production coming from the mill’s PM1 and PM2 machines.

Working closely with the Mepco technical team, FIS devised a 50m layout of special heavyduty slat conveyors to collect rolls from rewinder exits and transport them to the existing warehouse. Two rewinders, located on different levels, are connected using a lowering cradle, selectable stopper, hydraulic pushers and transfer shuttle to minimize the human operations and guarantee single roll cycle operation.

At the heart of the line is the patented Estenbob Dual 98 wrapping machine that is claimed to guarantee double protection with plastics film in both axial and radial style in one step – a method that ensures a reduction in working area. A weighing station, automatic labeller, inkjet applier and strapping machine complete the system. The whole operation is controlled by a new PC and PLC generation including new FIWIS software for label printing and the reporting of production activity.
