Applied Films has sold the first of its Smartweb roll-to-roll coating systems for sputter application. PET and polyamide films can be sputter coated with single layers or with multi layer stacks in one pass. The un-named customer is said to be a leading provider of high value biotechnology products and services.
Prior to the order, intensive customer trials of specific materials took place on the in-house Smartweb at Applied Films' site in Alzenau, Germany. They focused on process (reliability) requirements such as the peeling strength of the deposited metal layers as well as on a pinhole-free coating. All parameters were met by the system.
Its compactness and ease of use are said to be added values for the customer. With its small footprint, a height of less than 2.5m and its cleanroom compatible design, it reduces the need for expensive production infrastructure. The system will be installed early in 2006.
The Smartweb can deposit sputtered layers onto a wide range of film thicknesses in a dry, environment friendly process. It can also allow double-side metallization in a two-pass production. The sputtered layers are said to show a good adhesion (peeling strength) and to be virtually pinhole-free.
