Film that can breathe

2 September 2008

A range of ‘breathable’ BOPP film has been launched by Innovia. The PropaFresh P2G & P2GAF  permeable, non-perforated films are the direct result of work carried out at the company’s R&D facility, which enables it to tailor the rate at which gases – oxygen and carbon dioxide – are able to migrate in and out of a pack through the film itself.

Innovia claims the ability of PropaFresh P2G to ‘breathe’ makes it ideal for extending the shelf-life of a range of prepared fresh produce, which continues to respire following harvesting, processing and packing. The sister film PropaFresh P2GAF has been developed to provide “excellent anti-mist properties”.

PropaFresh P2G has an oxygen permeability of 3,000 (cm“/m” 24 hours) and CO2 permeability of 12,000(cm“/m” 24 hours). This ratio is said to be maintained whilst still increasing the volume gas exchange; the products keep their freshness and shelf appeal whilst maintaining organoleptic properties.

The new films’ benefits to the customer are given as heat sealability on both sides, printability, excellent seal integrity, food contact approved and peelable seals to make the pack easy to open.
