FEFCO’s (European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers) recent Congress, held in Prague, focused on sustainability. The primary aim of the event was to understand the implications of EU Sustainability Policies for the industry and to identify the latest sustainability expectations of customers and retailers.
A spotlight session outlined the targets and activities of the national corrugated packaging associations in France, Spain, Germany and the UK. It was felt that many of these projects could be implemented at European level, reinforcing the concept of Best Practices.
Ending on a positive note, the last presentation was a report by Robert Wilson, chairman of Pöyry Consulting, on Sustainability as a Management Tool. He showed that there are many positive measures that can be implemented, that are good for the environment as well as being economically sensible.
In his conclusion, John Williams, FEFCO's incoming president, remarked: “The members of a trade association cannot delegate the accountability for issues as important as sustainability to the trade association. It is the members’ duty to feel accountable for managing some of the relationship with stakeholders. FEFCO is there to facilitate and help to drive the issues that are at the top of the industry’s agenda”
