During IPEX Esko previewed its 3-D packaging design plug-in for Adobe Illustrator - DeskPack 3-dX. It is said to take the hassle out of translating 2-D to 3-D allowing designers to receive immediate feedback in three dimensions of how their graphics will look like on a printed package.
Integrating CAD and graphic design on the desktop it offers 3-D guidance to navigate through complex structural designs and use this virtual environment in the smart creation of the two-dimensional, unfolded production job. 3-dX automatically maintains a live link between the 3-D design visualisation and the unfolded 2-D structure. Cartons may consist of different co-planar flaps, spread over the 2D structure. The 3-dX distribution tool will repeat design elements automatically and seamlessly over the flaps. It will lead to a significant reduction of prototyping and proofing costs, adds Esko.
Launching the plug in, president and ceo Carsten Knudsen said: “With the packaging market set to grow globally by 3.5 per cent until 2014 this is not a bad industry to be in.” He reported that Esko had grown by 15 per cent last year and that in a survey since the change of ownership last year it had come out as the “leading systems integrator to the packaging pre-production industry”.
