UK supplier of narrow web flexo presses and speciality converting equipment Edale recently staged a series of open house demonstrations of its Lambda “infinitely flexible” converting and printing system. The highly versatile system was shown in its configuration as an off-line system for RFID and inlay affixing with Tamarack P500 RFID equipment.
Edale says the Lambda offers a cost effective alternative to more expensive RFID machines, as it can be easily reconfigured to do many other jobs. “This minimizes the associated risk in entering the relatively young RFID market,” the company states.
Fully servo driven, the Lambda’s ‘plug and play’ technology is said to allow virtually “any specification of any conceivable configuration”. Apart from RFID, modules are available for rotary die converting, punching, foiling, embossing, slitting, hotmelt, booklet/patch placement, and flexo/rotary screen/gravure/digital printing. Each module is positioned on a sliding platform, enabling them to be easily moved along the unit or lifted out and then back into a different location.
The Lambda RFID system can be used for a wide range of products including logistic labels, pharmaceutical labels, luggage tags, asset tracking labels, library labels, tickets, wristbands, and apparel hang tags. It includes a facility for detection and extraction of faulty inlays. Maximum operating speed is 150m/min, and placement accuracy is given as +/-0.4mm.
An entry level system is also available, using label applicator technology to insert a wet inlay. As with all Lambda configurations, it can be easily upgraded for ticket production or to include the Tamarack RFID insertion equipment - or for alternative applications.
Edale has just sold the first of these machines to a European converter. “We are now seeing a lot more interest in RFID,” notes managing director James Boughton.
