DuPont boosts OPP and polyester performance

27 July 2006

Entira Strong, a new polymeric additive from DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers, is claimed to help improve the performance and processibility of tapes, filaments and films made of OPP and polyester. Even at loading levels as low as two to three per cent by weight, it is said to deliver features ranging from increased hot drawability and tenacity to reduced dusting and splitting.

According to DuPont, studies have shown that dry blending two to three per cent by weight of Entira Strong with a base resin enables the stretch ratio to be increased 20-30 per cent above standard levels, with no reduction in elongation at break. The higher molecular orientation will lead to a tenacity increase and enable manufacturers of geotextiles, flexible bulk containers and multifilaments to consider downgauging as a means to achieving cost savings without compromising product performance, the company states.

The new product is also said to reduce dusting - minimizing blocking and wear on equipment, and helping to create a better work environment. Other advantages promised include: improved softness and smoothness for geotextiles and flexible bulk containers, which makes sewing easier and reduces wear from abrasion; and increased filler acceptance, which helps reduce costs by allowing the use of higher levels of low cost fillers.
