A dot reader designed specifically for the flexographic process is now commercially available from developer Troika Systems of Highworth UK. First shown as a prototype at drupa the FlexoCAM is targeted at markets where surface inspection and depth measurement, particularly halftone dots is needed. The quality control instrument is capable of measuring and analysing plate quality, 3D view of dot structures, and half-tone dot readings. In addition it is able to take readings from anilox rollers, providing feedback on cell depth, quality and wear, says the company.
Says director Steve Colthorpe: "Flexo really needed its own dot reader. Other systems are based on litho, but with flexo we need to focus on flat plates or curved surfaces of sleeves or large cylinders." FlexoCAM is designed to focus automatically on those surfaces and has the ability to look at the top of the plate and analyse through to the base of the material. It is this that results in the ability to provide a 3D view of the area being analysed. Detailed colour images captured by the FlexoCAM can be viewed on a PC screen, with the device linking directly via a USB interface.
It will read all screen rulings, including stochastic dots, and is capable of reading transparent and opaque flexo plate materials, claims the company.
Six units have been sold with a further three sites "genuinely interested". The unit is priced at £5,250 (US$9,000).
