Digital camera lifts monitoring level

23 September 2008

Billed as web monitoring with a ‘picture in picture’ function, Erhardt + Leimer’s Elscan system integrates two of its own digital cameras to display the complete repeat as well as monitoring the registration mark, for example.

Navigation is said to be simple. The operator uses the repeat overview display to select any area at any desired zoom level. The selected area will be displayed next on the screen. A digital zoom will allow up to a 50 X magnification.

Another innovation is strobe lighting. The homogeneous illumination is said to be especially effective on highly reflective surfaces.

The Elscan system is available in manual and motorized versions, is upgradeable and includes features such as image stabilisation, print screen and display of the last 16 images. An optional colour monitoring feature can be added to any system configuration.

Another recent E + L innovation is the TubeLight 100 per cent inspection illumination system. Providing totally diffused light for the company’s Nyscan system, it is said to be the only lighting system available that makes it possible to inspect printed webs with foil decoration, embossing, metallised substrates and other challenging features such as holographic images.

The TubeLight is complemented by Nyscan’s graphical user prompting. Changes in inspection sensitivity can be made any time during production by simple slide controls, while inspection validation requirements and procedures are said to remain uncompromised.
