Daesung Packing relies on Comexi's Offset CI8 technology to drive its business forward in Korea

The Comexi Group has recently reached an agreement to install the Comexi OFFSET CI8 in the Korean-based Daesung Packing company. Mainly focused in gravure printing for food packaging, Daesung Packing has trusted this outstanding technology to boost its sales in the Korean market, attracting new customers who seek high quality in short runs. In other words, to respond to stringent customers demands by providing innovative packaging in a very short delivery time while respecting environment. Additionally, as the Comexi OFFSET CI8 will be installed in a new factory, Daesung Packing no longer needs to invest in peripheral equipment such as incinerator, distillatory or anilox cleaning system.

The new plant is completed with other Comexi solutions. Besides the Comexi OFFSET CI8 has acquired a Comexi NEXUS SL2 solventless laminator and a Comexi PROSLIT S2 DT double turret rewinder slitter, which allows Daesung Packing to run a solvent-free factory. In this sense, the electricity will be produced by solar and heat-recycling device, meanwhile geothermal energy will be used for heating system, enabling Daesung Packing to operate its factory with only half energy consumption in comparison with other converters. This sustainable commitment is certificated with ISO 14000 (environmental manangement), ISO 22000 (food safety management) and G7 (color management).

The Comexi OFFSET CI8 becomes the suitable solution to strengthen Daesung Packing positioning as environmentally responsible printer while maintaining high standards of quality, through a simple process very close to digital technology but with a greater production capacity. This is enabled by joining the advantages of both offset variable lengths and flexo central impression drum printing in one single press for flexible packaging and labels.

Market demands as opportunity for market leaders
It is not new that flexible packaging has been facing the rising costs of materials and price pressures while run lengths have been decreasing. Within this scenario, operating costs and specifically changeover times and waste are key factors to take into account when deciding the best printing solution.
Brand owners are increasingly demanding to add value to their packs; highest quality, fast delivery and competitive prices are perhaps never ending requests. Those demands are challenging the capabilities of the converters with traditional technologies. It is an opportunity for those converters to introduce an innovative technology that easily solves those requirements and simplifies operational processes.
For the flexible package printer , Comexi Group is promoting a central impression offset variable repeat printing technology. Announced in 2012, the Comexi OFFSET CI8 press is the market leader for sustainable short and medium runs. Comexi Group has developed a press that replaces solvent inks by using EB curing technology, which allows the use of solventless and instantaneous cured inks without photoinitiators, fully compatible for its use in food packaging. Its fast job changeover, high printing quality and pre-press low cost also characterize the Comexi OFFSET CI8. All these benefits are combined with a much cleaner printing process in comparison with flexo or rotogravure technologies.

Offset technology provides maximum flexibility in the production process, allowing very short time-to-market, due to the fast in-house pre-press that allows preparing a new job while the press is still carrying out a previous one. The printing cylinders are easy to exchange manually (automatic cylinder exchange is available as an optional) and all job parameters can be digitally stored and recalled. The pre-setting of mechanical adjustments like ink keys, form-rollers and printing cylinders are automatic.

Another point to be highlighted is the considerable savings for the companies due to the fast and keen in-house plate making. Offset technology is characterized by the use of lithographic plates, with much less costs compared with photopolymers or engraved cylinders used in traditional flexo and rotogravure technologies. The cost reduction at this part of the process allows changing the design and language, adding new logos or making promotional campaigns without additional printing costs. It also allows reducing minimum print runs and printing film in stock.

The Comexi OFFSET CI8 press use servo drive technology, allowing fast production, reduced press downtime and start-up waste. The machine prints in up to 7-colors, plus white or lacquer, with a web width of 900 mm or 1100 mm, at a maximum speed of 300m/min.
