Crown Launch Sustainability Initiative at Braubeviale 2016

To help global beverage brands enhance engagement and interaction with consumers, CROWN Bevcan Europe and Middle East showed its comprehensive portfolio of packaging innovations at BrauBeviale 2016. Ideal for a variety of beverage applications including soft drinks, energy drinks, beer and craft beer, Crown's technologies enhance convenience, increase shelf appeal and help build brand loyalty.

At the show, CROWN unveiled CrownLibra, a lightweighting programme that is designed to address the challenges of material optimisation and to explore how far the lightweighting envelope can be pushed. The program reflects a core tenet of Crown's sustainability strategy and its commitment to focus on effectively managing and conserving resources without impacting the critical barrier and strength properties that beverage brand owners demand from metal beverage packaging.

Crown is also announcing a partnership with Internet of Things (IoT) Smart Products Platform EVRYTHNG, resulting in the first application of IoT-enabled metal packaging. Through this collaboration, Crown will provide serialised, on-product digital triggers to brands packaged in beverage, food and aerosol cans and specialty packaging tins at point of manufacture. These triggers will be integrated with the EVRYTHNG platform to enable any consumer packaged good product to be Born Digital. This integration will allow Crown's customers to benefit from a complete smart package solution by using digitally-enabled products like CrownSmart and CrownSecure. Brands will gain the opportunity to enhance consumer engagement through special promotions and personalised experiences, while also being able to collect insight and data that can help them better anticipate trends and adapt to changing demands. The technology will also help improve product traceability, helping brands manage issues like quality and product recalls and support efforts to enhance manufacturing efficiencies and combat counterfeiting.

Crown will also present a wide variety of beverage ends at BrauBeviale. Recent design innovations in end technology have helped expand the value they offer to include opportunities to enhance the drinking experience and allow brands to personalise the moment of consumption, ultimately resulting in a memorable brand experience. For example, CrownSmartT provides a unique, scannable code beneath the tab, which can be used to deliver a wide range of content or experiential information to individual consumers.

DigitabT, Crown's digital tab printing technology, and laser etched cut out tabs were also showcased at BrauBeviale, as was the 360 End, which continues to grow in popularity with the craft beer sector. With the 360 End, the entire lid of the beverage can is removed, allowing the full flavour and aroma to hit the drinker's olfactory senses without the need for separate glassware. The beer industry can also utilize Crown's Global Vent end, which features a dual aperture opening to facilitate a smoother pour from the beverage can. Consumers simply open the beverage can as usual, turn the tab to align it over the button-shaped depression to the right of the main opening and then press down to activate the second aperture.

Crown's design and development capabilities were also spotlighted at the show. CROWN Bevcan Europe's in-house Design Studio, a one-stop shop and centre of excellence for customers in the EMEA region, works in partnership with brands to realise their visions in metal packaging. Reveal, which uses temperature sensitive inks to engage consumers before, during and after beverage consumption, is one example of technology developed by the Design Studio team. With the special inks, graphics can change to 'reveal' specific imagery and messaging as the cold product inside the can is consumed. Crown's Customer Technical Service (CTS) team will also be on hand at Brau Beviale to showcase a precision base load gauge. Intuitive and accurate, this device has been engineered to improve seamer accuracy and efficiency.

"The variety of services and products on display at BrauBeviale this year is a testament to Crown's commitment to helping its customers engage and interact with consumers," comments Matt Twiss, Marketing & Business Development Director for CROWN Bevcan Europe and Middle East. "We are excited to reveal our latest technologies and partnerships in Nuremberg and explore how we can help beverage brands create differentiation on the shelf."
