Corrugated prices on the rise

19 September 2005

Corrugated case material manufacturers worldwide are announcing price increases. In the US, Smurfit Stone has raised both linerboard and corrugating medium by $30, while European paper suppliers have announced a similar rise.

Higher energy and freight costs are blamed for the climb in raw material costs, which will only compound the steep increases the corrugated industry is already enduring.

FEFCO secretary general Wim Hoebert warns that, in spite of the pressure from customers for further price reductions, increases in corrugated board prices are unavoidable.

"The margins in the corrugated sector have eroded dramatically and producers will have to take steps to avoid losses," he says.
