Corniche takes waste reduction initiative

30 August 2007

As pressure mounts on the industry to cut waste, UK based prepress and packaging design specialist Corniche is to undertake a major survey of manufacturers’ packaging needs.

Business development director Dave Ettie comments: “Shelf ready packaging offers us a major opportunity as manufacturers face up to the increasing legislation governing the disposal of waste. They will have to reduce the amount of packaging they currently use and many are looking to replace the display carton and the corrugated case with one piece of shelf ready packaging.

“Our first task is to find out exactly what the manufacturers’ needs are and then to demonstrate to them that we can replace litho laminate with flexo post printing without losing any of the quality, to demonstrate the availability of high quality graphics through the flexo process. It will also reduce their costs.”

As part of the initiative, Corniche has appointed industry ‘guru’ Stan Cunliffe to lead the research and development of the shelf ready business. A former director of printed carton manufacturer Walmsley, and founder and managing director of Deeside Paperbox, he became chairman of Mayr Melnhof Packaging in the UK, a post he held until 2002.

He states: “I shall be focusing on developing the markets with converters and major end users, in particular in the food industry.”
