Converting line capitalises on EB benefits

1 August 2012

US companies PCT Engineered Systems and Breit Technologies have jointly developed the BroadBeam EB 4-In-1 converting line based on electron beam (EB) curing technology. EB, the partners state, offers high speed reaction requires very little energy, and is environmentally smart, requiring no solvents and producing virtually no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). For food packaging producers, it provides low taint, odour and migration, is food friendly, and generates minimal substrate heating, which is important when processing sensitive materials like thin films.

The new BroadBeam system goes beyond ink curing, however, by offering four interchangeable packaging enhancement operation modes: Coating; Laminating; Coldfoil transfer; Cast and Cure.

Breit Technologies’ Cast and Cure is a decorative coating process that offers consistent high quality decorative effects including ultra-high gloss, matte and holographic images on a variety of substrates. It can also provide anti-counterfeiting features. This “low cost and environmentally friendly” process utilises a reusable film to micro emboss decorative effects into the surface of energy curable varnishes.

“We’ve had several leading-edge package printers ‘test drive’ a BroadBeam 4-In-1 system,” reports Karl Swanson, PCT’s director of sales and marketing. “Everyone was impressed by the way our compact design incorporates a print system with our patented Integrated Shield Roll, but they were most excited about the system’s ability to re-register patterns on extensible films.”
