Conference debates cartons

24 May 2004

At a recent BPIF British Carton Association/Pro Carton conference, Chesapeake Field Group and MM Packaging Europe chief executives Keith Gilchrist and Dr Andreas Blaschke went head to head in a debate on the relative merits of running a global operation from either the UK or from mainland Europe. Factors considered included differing working practices, local legislation, social costs, pay and statutory leave across the UK, Eire, Belgium, Germany, France and Spain.

The first session was followed by a detailed look at two related but competing industries to folding cartons - plastics and flexible packaging. Presentations delivered respectively by chief executives Ron Marsh, of RPC, and John Durston, of Amcor Flexibles Europe, gave carton converters a provocative overview of their packaging market competitors. Session chairman John Monks, chief executive of MY Holdings, was able to comment on the industry from his own considerable experience in the packaging business.

Converters were also challenged by Helen Potter, brands packaging manager for the Edrington Group whose signature product is Famous Grouse whisky, who argued that carton manufacturers needed to be more innovative and less insular looking if they are to promote their packaging in an increasingly competitive marketing industry.
