Colour control cuts makeready waste by half

22 March 2011

US paperboard packaging converter Graphic Packaging International (GPI) has reduced makeready waste at its Perry, Georgia, plant by 50%, after installing a QuadTech colour control system with SpectralCam on its manroland Cartoman web offset press.

Thanks to the QuadTech system, the refurbished 16-year old press is said to accurately reproduce unique spot colours to target aim point values. Spectral data from each patch of the colour bar is evaluated to quickly recognize and remedy deviations from colour specifications, immediately issuing colour adjustment requests to the ink keys. The fast response means desired colour targets are achieved faster at the beginning of the print run, and held consistent throughout the entire production.

Makeready is further simplified thanks to software that automatically adjusts press’s register and colour control settings when a change in repeat length is necessary.
