Colombier rolls out mobile reel divider

11 June 2007

A new mobile reel dividing machine designed to handle large format reels capable of dividing a parent reel into multiple webs without unwrapping or unwinding has been trialled in the UK.

Colombier says its MRD (Mobile Reel Divider) can handle reels up to 4.5m in width, 2m in diameter and 9t in weight, making it the only machine of its type in the UK able to provide on-site dividing and resizing.

A spokesman says it is designed for the repair of damaged stock and changing the width of paper reels while maintaining the original mill tension. The finished reel will retain its original livery, and runnability on press is guaranteed, he says. Cores of either 150 or 152mm can be reduced to a standard 76mm core without having to rewind.

A spokesman says mobile reel resizing is a cost effective way of recovering damaged reels, resizing of redundant stock and re-pagination.

Tony Carr, purchasing manager of Prinovis in Liverpool, says: “Having the capability to resize large reels onsite, means we keep costs to a minimum and our operational efficiency at maximum.”

Colombier (UK) operations director Rob King says the Dutch machine used in the trials will shortly be joined by a second machine based at the company's UK site at Sittingbourne, Kent.
