Coextrusion co-operation

23 September 2005

Smurfit-Stone Container has partnered EIJ Packaging to launch a new company that will produce coextruded flexible packaging and printed lamination products for a variety of consumer goods customers. The EIJ-SSFP operation is expected to begin by the end of this year.

"The new partnership is a win-win for both organizations, allowing us the ability to expand upon the flexible packaging markets and customers we serve," says Gary McDaniel, vp and general manager of Smurfit-Stone's flexible packaging and label group. "It will provide multiple benefits for both companies, including the capacity expansion for coextruded films. Our customers will also have the opportunity to conduct business with a strong 'tier one' minority supplier for their flexible packaging needs."

EIJ-SSFP's headquarters will be located in the Chicago area, and its new 50,000ft2 production plant will be next to Smurfit-Stone's Milwaukee, WI, flexible packaging facility. The new company will install a three-layer coextruder and ancillary slitting equipment. Smurfit-Stone will also install a new 10 colour flexo press.

Pollis Robertson, Jr, president of EIJ, will become president and ceo of EIJ-SSFP.
