Coating tails controlled

25 January 2006

Somatec Sondermaschinenbau has developed a synchronous tail controlling device for roll changes on continuously running coating machines.

The tail of the old roll is firmly adhered to the new web and fastened with a special paper which simply dissolves when it is attached to the old web. This prevents the new roll from being misaligned due to sheet flutter. A contrast adhesive tape is attached to the end of the adhesive layer on the new roll, which signals to a sensor when to cut away the old web.

By calculating the speed of the equipment as well as the distance to the tail controlling device, the unit subsequently calculates - "exactly to the millisecond" - when the splice will reach the end of the old web, to be glued and pressed down. This procedure is said to ensure accurate positioning.

Somatec says it has demonstrated the viability of the tail controlling device in more than 1,000 practical tests that have contributed to reducing waste and waiting times to an absolute minimum.
