Coated air chamber makes a smooth operator

23 February 2010

A patented silicone-coated air chamber roller for use with differential shafts on slitter rewinding machines has been introduced by Lüraflex. It has two rubber coverings, the first with a profile cut into the surface and a second which forms an air chamber.

This construction creates a soft roller with a durable silicone coated surface that allows the roller to be used for variable profile rewinding, with an even pressure across the web and with very little increase in web tension. According to Lüraflex, these properties help to spread any air entrained during rewinding by spreading the air evenly across the web and not allowing any pockets to build up in the rewound material.

The soft feel of the roller helps to hold the web material in position when rewinding, giving a square and even web build-up and leading to a uniform hardness of the roll with no marking of the web material, it is claimed. As a result, the quality of rewound products is improved, even when used with slippery, thin or coated materials.

The softness of the roller compensates for any difference in thickness of the rewound material, while the silicone coating permits the individual webs to slip, allowing the differential shaft to adjust the web tension.

Lüraflex says the advantages of this system have been confirmed in practical operation by a number of manufacturers in the UK and across Europe. As a result, the silicone coated rollers are now specified by both Wickeltechnik and Uebach.

If slippage is not required, the roller can be provided with different coverings to suit the individual application.
