Co-operation on cutting contours also cuts costs

25 March 2005

Esko-Graphics has teamed up with MGE (Mikkelsen Graphic Engineering) and is co-operating with Scitex Vision to offer a versatile package for the display, POP and sign market.

It is shortly to launch the i-cut vision control system and i-script workflow, developed by MGE and integrated with Esko-Graphics' Kongsberg i-XL series of die cutting tables.

The i-cut vision system checks each graphic on each sheet for registration and for any dimensional changes. Esko-Graphics EMEALA marketing director Hubert Scheir told Converting Today: "With their integrated software we will create the contour and use it to pinpoint their reference points, which are added during the printing of the image. It enables us to get perfect registration of the cut."

Serious time and cost savings can be achieved since the combined system helps to reduce set-up time, material waste and overall production time, and to perform exact cost calculations, claims the company.

The recently introduced Esko Graphics multi-purpose toolhead MultiCUT "enables us to cut virtually anything," said Hubert Scheir. Together with two standard configurable tool stations that can be set up for cutting and creasing, it features a new milling spindle. Targeted materials include plywood, acrylics, polycarbonates, Dibond, rigid PVC, wood, and high pressure laminates. The Kongsberg XL family is ideally suited for cutting, creasing and scoring low volume corrugated and folding carton jobs because of its tooling versatility.

The arrival of flatbed digital printing creates an enormous opportunity for excellent inventive designs, says the company. "The market is booming," added Hubert Scheir. "That's why our timing is so perfect." Featuring the i-XL as an immediate digital converting and finishing solution allows the digital printer to offer completely integrated manufacturing services. Hence the display maker can expand his business applications. "He doesn't have to outsource the converting – he can do it all in house."

"However, our guys have to concentrate on the big packaging suppliers. That's why we are pleased to have Scitex Vision as a commercial partner. Their CORjet digital printer is a perfect fit at the moment. "

Ronen Zioni, sales director Packaging and Displays Europe of Scitex Vision, told Converting Today: "I am a strong believer in this strategic partnership. We will see the first fruits of the collaboration by the end of this year."
