Closures and job cuts at Stora Enso

21 November 2012

Stora Enso is restructuring its operations through the permanent closure of the corrugated packaging plant at Ruovesi in Finland, and the permanent shutdown of paper machine 1 (newsprint) at the Hylte Mill in Sweden. There will also be efficiency improvements at several other mills – all with the aim of cutting annual costs by €36 million and reducing the number of employees by approximately 520.

The closure of the corrugated packaging plant at Ruovesi in the second quarter of 2013, affecting approximately 60 employees, is due to decreased demand for offset printed corrugated packaging in Finland and the plant’s poor financial performance. Stora Enso plans to serve Finnish offset customers through its other offset plants in Europe.

It is also planned to streamline operations at the Heinola, Ingerois and Pori board plants in Finland and corrugated packaging operations at all the Swedish units to ensure lon -term competitiveness. The number of employees in Sweden and Finland will be reduced by up to 100, mostly by the end of the third quarter of 2013.

The previously announced permanent shutdown of board machine 2 at the Ostroleka Mill in Poland is planned by the end of 2012. Including the effects of an overall review of Polish board and converting operations, the number of employees in Poland would decrease by up to 135. Plans to improve efficiency at the Skutskär Pulp Mill in Sweden would reduce the number of employees there by approximately 60, mostly by the end of Q3 quarter of 2013.
