Ciba to shut down MetalFX operation

14 November 2008

MetalFX, developer of the process that allows millions of metallic colours to be printed by adding only one base silver ink to the usual CMYK mix, is to close its business on December 19, 2008. The UK based operation is part of the Ciba Specialty Chemicals group, which is set to be acquired by BASF soon.

Ciba says the main reason for its closure is that “the business does not fit with Ciba Coating Effects core business, not the potential for the product in the design, printing, packaging and publishing markets”.

The company is working with an external technical support consultancy to establish telephone support for the product for 12 months after the business closes. It will send this information out prior to closure. All on-going contracts will come to a close on December 19.
