Chinese choose Omet

13 July 2005

A major Chinese cigarette company has ordered the first Omet Varyflex in-line printing and converting press to be sold to the tobacco industry. The machine is a 520mm wide fully servo driven press, with 10 printing stations and two in-line die cutting stations. It is mainly a flexo press but has the facility to interchange one rotogravure print unit and one (Omet CAST) silkscreen unit. Both of these are interchangeable between all the print stations and available for use of UV, solvent and water based inks.

To protect the products against counterfeiting, the machine is also equipped with hologram application units running up to 100m/min with up to six stripes of holograms.

After the Martin butt splicer unwinder with double festoon, the first operation is to laminate the board with a hologram foil applied by mean of a wet glue. After having been coated the board can be printed either flexo, gravure, or screen, in up to 10 colours. In between all the printing units, holograms can be applied by a hotfoil system equipped with six reel holders, each with an independent saver to allow each hologram stripe to work with a different pitch. There are two of these units, for a total of 12 stripe hologram applications in the press. Each of these units can also be moved and interchanged in between any print station.

All drying and curing operations are made over a chill drum to ensure maximum stability of the substrates. Once the substrate has been printed, it can be laminated with film, cold foil and varnished.

It is then fed to the die cutting stations where the boxes are embossed, creased and die cut.

The Omet machine will be used primarily for the production of cigarette and tobacco packs and their packaging, including the wraparound film for the boxes. The Varyflex is designed to run from 12 micron film to 600 micron board without need of any mechanical adjustment.
