Checkpress cuts out print rejects

14 May 2008

UK label manufacturer Systems Labelling, has invested in five Checkpress web inspection systems from SurfscanTechnologies for a Comco and four Mark Andy presses. The systems were configured with 200 hours of programming time by Surfscan’s development team to meet the label company’s precise requirements.

Tony Exford, sales director at Deeside based Systems Labelling, comments: “Quality lies at the heart of everything we do here. By offering 100 per cent validated inspection, the Surfscan system takes the issue of poor quality out of the equation and underpins our own quality claims.”

Part of the reason for the selection of the Checkpress system was its ability to dovetail with the label converter’s MIS - even to the point of producing roll maps on the presses and then conducting final checks on a series of Arpeco and Scantech rewinders through an Ethernet connection.

According to Systems Labelling, waste reduction is one of the many spin-off benefits of the Checkpress. It has been programmed to measure the density of ink using its greyscale value and this provides advance warning of ink run-out, which in turn saves operator time.

The company reports that, during trials of the Checkpress, there were zero customer print rejects.
