Chapelton hits the right note with Jazz@heat

Kent-based speciality paper and cartonboard supplier, Chapelton, has announced that it will distribute dual ovenable, biodegradable, recyclable (as a mono-material) and compostable Eco food barrier grade, called Jazz@heat, from Finnish manufacturer Plastiroll.

Jazz@heat is a dispersion coated SBS board, which has been approved and certified for food contact applications. It is suitable for a wide range of direct food contact uses, including dual ovenable trays and bakery products to temperatures up to 220°C, and has a heat sealable coating. The unique food barrier product is not only recyclable, compostable and repulpable, but it is also grease, moisture resistant and is mouldable.

Due to its unique ‘green’ product qualities, it is ideal for use in food barrier applications, providing distinct advantages when compared to traditional barriers such as PET grade materials, which are neither compostable nor biodegradable, whilst the plastic in PET grades will also need to be separated from the board in waste disposal meaning higher recycling fees will be incurred which are not relevant  as it classed as a mono-material.

Plastiroll is a privately owned, Finnish company, founded in 1983. Plastiroll develops and manufactures biodegradable and compostable materials for the packaging industry, in particular compostable and recyclable barrier paper and board materials for the food packaging sector, as well as for other applications. With a turnover of 32m Euros in 2015, the company has two manufacturing sites in Ylöjärvi, near Tampere, Finland.

Commenting on the distribution deal for the Eco barrier food grade, Jazz@heat, Chapelton Managing Director, Neil Skelton, stated, “We have already had great successes with the product, with end uses such as airline meals, high end ready meal packaging, cook in box applications amongst others. Our arrangement with Plastiroll works very well as they provide us with the flexibility not offered by other suppliers.”
