Certification for first compostable adhesive

4 February 2011

Epotal Eco, from BASF, is the first compostable water-based adhesive certified by the German Technical Inspection Agency TÜV.

“Biologically degradable adhesives will play a decisive role in the future when it comes to developing compostable packaging materials,” states Cornelis Beyers, Marketing Industrial Adhesives, BASF. He says Epotal Eco is particularly suitable for the production of multi-layer films for flexible packaging materials based on biodegradable plastics. Possible applications are bags for potato chips or chocolate bar wrappings.

Apart from its compostability, Epotal Eco is also said to offer all the benefits of water-based adhesives as an environmentally friendly and efficient alternative to solvent-based and solvent-free products for food packaging applications.
