Canadean forecasts lightweight packaging trend to boost US plastics consumption

A new report from Canadean says continued growth in demand for lightweight plastic packaging will be a key trend in the US retail market leading up to 2017.

In its report, Latest Trends and Key Issues in the US Retail Packaging Market 2013, the market research company says American consumers will be using 32,850 million more rigid plastic and flexible packs in 2017 than they were in 2012, making these “the fastest-growing segments in the US packaging industry”.

The requirement for greater convenience and cost-effectiveness will drive the use of lightweight flexible and rigid plastic packaging, Canadean asserts, with innovative pack shapes, closures and dispensers.

Dominic Cakebread, Canadean director of packaging services, says: “The key advantage of flexible packaging is its low intrinsic weight, which ensures lower transportation overheads and reduces the overall supply chain costs.

“These incremental weight savings not only provide cost benefits, but also reduce transportation costs and overall breakages.”

The Latest Trends and Key Issues in the US Retail Packaging Market 2013 report from Canadean also discusses such topics as the increasing technical demands of producing lightweight packaging materials to reduce packaging materials weights and gauges/thickness while maintaining the same technical performance; issues concerning bio-plastics production; and challenges such as the unstable prices of raw materials and a lack of skilled labour.
