Addressing the 35th Annual Luncheon of UK flexible packaging industry trade association PAFA, deputy director-general of the CBI John Cridland, CBE, told more than 200 packaging business leaders, MPs and senior civil servants that industry must not become a ‘fall guy’ to the media or to politicians. He said the attacks on the packaging industry were “fuelled by a high level of misinformation”.
As former director of environmental affairs at the CBI, he reinforced the view that without plastics packaging we would throw significantly more food away than we do at present and said he believed the industry made a vital contribution to the economy.
On the wider and more pressing economic issues faced by British industry he said it was time to “take stock of the prospects and standing of industry”, and talked of “tough battles” which lay ahead. “We meet at a time of economic uncertainty, rising inflation, slowing growth and economic prospects which have undoubtedly deteriorated”.
Yet, in spite of what he described as “choppy waters”, he said UK industry should view the current climate as one of “slowdown rather than recession” and “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. We must not fall prey to talking ourselves into a recession”.
